Shop for a Fireplace Mantel Shelf
We commonly use the term “Mantel Shelves” to describe thinner, rectangular mantels ranging from 3 to 5 inches in thickness. While these shelves are frequently chosen to adorn the space above a fireplace, it’s worth noting that we’ve seen people use them in all kinds of locations throughout their home. These mantel shelves also fit great above the newly popular horizontal fireplace.

Mantels with Metalwork
We’ve been working for over a decade with great blacksmith, Wyatt Bienfang at WLB Blacksmith Shop, to add authentically hand-hammered metalwork to mantels. We can start with one of the mantels above and then add additional ironwork or build one specifically for you. See Metal Straps for more information on ironwork. These are custom pieces and we are happy to work out the details with you including lots of inspirational photos and detailed drawings.
Sizing Mantels
For any of the mantels above, we can cut them down in length and even depth, but we can’t make ’em any longer. We’ll cut and re-finish at no additional charge. If you see something you like but it is the wrong size or already sold, we probably have something similar available that we’d be happy to work up.
Mom and Pop Shop
Yes, indeed, we are literally a mom-and-pop shop. We answer the phone and we work hands-on to build these mantels. We’ve been doing this for almost 20 years and still love it. While we try to keep the inventory above up to date, sometimes we just can quite keep up.
We really do pride ourselves in old-fashioned one-on-one service even though most of our business shipped across the country.

He even gave us multiple options for the grain of the various boards, taking time to explain why he thought different combinations worked well visually. We appreciated his friendly updates with process photos throughout. We also loved that we could see other projects online–we like the naming convention! I bought a mantel from Antique Woodworks about two years ago. I should have posted this sooner, but we’re thrilled with the purchase we made. The owners cut it and did some fine tuning right on the spot, which saved me time for installation. Further, my wife didn’t want a mantel with lacquer and poly off-gassing in our master bedroom so the piece is finished with a wax product which is marvelous. Finally, we appreciated the owners giving us the background of the wood species and where this beam was likely harvested from. While a little out of the way from the Twin Cities, it was a worthwhile experience and I would recommend these folks highly.
Kevin created 2 beautiful mantels for our home! He is meticulous about the details and a true craftsman. His partnership with Wyatt allowed us to add iron details that made them each unique! Thank you all for adding such beauty to our home. We love them!

Fantastic ‘hand hewn’ mantel from the mid 1800’s! Easy company to work with and even when I had a small ‘boo boo’ that I caused during the installation, they sent me the repair parts for a quick and easy fix.

What an exceptional experience purchasing a reclaimed beam from Antique Woodworks! We were able to review pictures of the raw beam and select the piece. It was then cut to our specifications and finished and final pictures were emailed. We were not obligated to purchase the mantle unless we liked the finish product. It was carefully packaged and shipped to us and was received within a week. So pleased with how it came out and the customer service was excellent. Highly recommend!
