Product Description
Reclaimed White Oak Mantel
This exceptional reclaimed white oak mantel perfectly bridges old-world character with contemporary style! Carefully resawn from a century-old beam, it maintains that authentic reclaimed testimony while offering clean, modern appeal.
The face is beautifully knot-free with a charming crack that speaks to its genuine age and story. The two original mortise pockets on top and bottom will be carefully filled, while old square nails dotting the surface add wonderful historical detail. Some weathered character on the top and bottom faces will sand away during finishing, leaving you with the perfect balance of rustic authenticity and refined elegance.
Currently measuring 7.375″ tall by a generous 8.5″ deep, this versatile piece can be re-cut to your exact specifications. For a sleeker profile, we can rotate it to create a 4.5″ tall by 7.375″ deep mantel – perfect for modern installations seeking that reclaimed touch.
- This resawn, reclaimed white oak fireplace mantel is shown as sanded, but no finish has been applied.
- Sizing (cutting and sanding the ends) as well as finishing is included in the price
- We can preserve the current color or darken with some various techniques.
- It is currently 7.375 inches tall x 8.5 inches deep
- The full size is 63.25 inches long, but can be cut down
- It ships via UPS Ground for $150
This beam comes from our Amish partner deep in Wisconsin’s scenic farmland. The region’s rolling hills and pastoral scenes with cattle grazing peacefully create a timeless backdrop to our visits there. Our relationship with this Amish family has grown into something truly special over many years. The business he established is now doing well under his sons’ skilled leadership. This particular timber was rescued from a Wisconsin barn, most likely built in the early 1900s during the era when mechanized sawmills were beginning to transform the local building trade.
About the tag – Marshall Wells Stores were wholesale hardware and grocery outlets founded in 1886 in Duluth, Minnesota, operating across the northwestern United States and Canada. The company, which began as Chapin-Wells Co. and evolved into Marshall-Wells Company, maintained its headquarters and warehouses in Duluth. The original Marshall-Wells firm ceased operations in 1958 after its Duluth Division was bought by Coast-to-Coast Stores. I think this advertisement came from a 1953 edition of the Farm Journal.
More Mantel Inventory
You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
