Rectangular mantels are not the most common pieces around in reclaimed wood. In this case, we have a couple of very nice Douglas Fir 3-by-5s that have been joined together to create a nice mantel piece that is 3.5in tall x 10.25in deep x 71.75in long. The material came out of a barn near our home in Norwood, Minnesota. These pieces are probably near 100 years old. They have nice grain patterns as well as nice color variation and nail holes.

The two pieces were joined together with 5 hand hammered bolts that were worked up by one of our blacksmiths — Wyatt Bienfang. It is always a pleasure to get real handwork, rather than mass manufactured pieces. The head on each one of these bolts is unique and individually hammered. There are alternating sizes of small and large heads.

This piece has been finished with a hardwax oil. It currently has a very flat sheen. We could (and probably want to) add another quick coat of finish to increase the sheen from flat to matte. Not glossy, but a just a tad more shine.

This piece is priced at $100 per linear foot (LF). 6LF = $600. We can cut this one down and reduce the cost by $8.33 per inch, up to a $100 discount. This one ships by FedEx Gnd for $65.
The mantel tag – This one is an ad from a 1930s newspaper when traveling by ship from the US to Europe was the only way to go.
