Product Description

Meet the Deep, Solid White Oak Shelf. This mantel’s story begins not in a barn, but in a storm. Downed by the forces of nature, this White Oak was salvaged, sawn into lumber and stored in a barn for several decades, slowly seasoning and developing the kind of quiet, earned character you simply can’t manufacture. Then kiln-treated to ensure lasting integrity — and the result is outstanding.

Look closely at the front face and you’ll spot a charming cluster of knots amdist relatively simple flowing grains — nature’s own artwork, right where everyone can appreciate it. The old circle saw marks that run across the surface are a genuine throwback, a visible reminder of an earlier era of saw milling before bandsaws become so popular. Rather than hiding these details, we celebrate them. They’re what make this piece real.

The tone is warm, even, and inviting — a rich natural oak that works beautifully with modern, rustic, or transitional interiors. At a full 10 inches deep, this shelf has serious presence above any fireplace. Substantial, solid, and completely one of a kind. This is the kind of piece that becomes the focal point of a room — and the story behind it makes it even better.

  • This solid white oak shelf is shown as sanded, but no finish has been applied
  • We can preserve the current color or darken with an oil finish. (see darker pictures at end)
  • We could potentially lighten a bit and create more of a white washed look as well.
  • Admittedly, the bottom is a little uglier, but you’ll never see it straight-on, like it is photographed.
  • Great 10.5in depth! It is currently 4.0 tall x 10.5 deep x 66in long
  • Sizing (cutting and sanding the ends) as well as finishing are included in the price
  • It ships via UPS Ground for $150

Out in the Minnesota countryside, resourceful farmers never let good wood go to waste. When storms take down trees — and they do — the timber gets sawn into lumber and stacked in the barn for someday. This particular White Oak came from exactly that kind of pile: a beautiful mix of 4-by red and white oak, tucked away on a farm nestled between Glencoe and Norwood Young America. How long did it sit there seasoning? Decades, almost certainly. That patient wait is exactly what makes this wood so special. In the barn, the color of white oak wood warms up over time.

About the tag –The Chimney Sweep, clipped from a 1964 Golden Book edition of Disney’s Mary Poppins, published the very year the beloved film hit theaters. The illustration has that warm, hand-drawn charm only vintage Golden Books could deliver — and if you look closely, the cheerful sweep dancing across the page bears more than a passing resemblance to Dick Van Dyke himself. A chimney sweep on a fireplace mantel tag? It doesn’t get more fitting than that. Of course, you can find copies on eBay (or maybe your grandparent’s bookshelf).

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
