In these old barns, there are often very large door jams through which the cows travel in and out. This fireplace mantel shelf was made from just such a door jam. It is a very nice big piece of white oak — nearly 12 inches deep and 3 inches thick. The original topside was too rotten, so we cut and planed off nearly an inch. It is thinner, but now much cleaner. The topside shows off some nice reclaimed character and color variation. The face and bottom are a little more similar in color. The front has some pleasant wood grain character and nail holes. The bottom sports a nice, interesting crack flowing throughout.

This piece came from a barn on Scandia Road near Waconia, Minnesota. This old barn was about 2 or 3 miles from the Swedish immigrant, Andrew Peterson, Farm. The Andrew Peterson farm became famous, particularly in Sweden, after the meticulous journals he kept became the basis for Vilhelm Moberg’s Emigrants book series.

This mantel shelf is priced at $100 per LF. 72in long = $600. We can cut the mantel shorter, and reduce the price by $8.33 per inch for a discount up to $100. Just give us a call or send email (antiqueww@gmail.com) if you’d like this custom sized. It will ship via FedEx Gnd for $65.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
