Product Description

Solid White Oak Beam

This white oak wood mantel piece makes for a great fit in contemporary, nature-inspired interiors. This is a real, solid beam. This beam displays small feather cracks, color variations, and knots which all testify to this beam being a real, solid piece of wood. It is not a box beam. Finishing the natural look can also be tricky. We’ve found a nice balance using a pre-treatment and a natural wax finish (including bees and carnauba waxes). This wood mantel has a wonderful, smooth touch that allows you to still feel the wood grains and yet maintains the natural light color of the raw wood.

  • This solid wood mantel piece has been sanded, but no finish coat has been applied. Final finishing is included in the price.
We can preserve this nice natural white oak color, or the piece will naturally go darker with our typical, high-end Rubio Monocoat finish.
  • It is currently 7.625in tall x 7.625in deep x 53.825 inches long. We can cut to size at no additional charge.
  • The ends are currently un-finished, waiting to be re-sized. We’ll take care of that.
  • The side with the large cracks was the intended back. However, we could finish it and you could use it as a visible side.
  • The mantel can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

This particular batch of white oak is somewhat modern. This wood mantel piece was cut down about 25 years ago. It was stored in a heated shouse (shed/house) for that entire time. It is dry and has become what-you-see-is-what-you-get. The owner of the material originally purchased a property and cut down a bunch of oaks and got them sawn. He was planning to build a timber frame house, but that never quite came to fruition. Thus, we ran into this great pile of well-dried material.

Large, thoroughly dried timber like this is rare. Few suppliers offer large timber this thoroughly dried. Drying thick wood properly compares to cooking a large cut of meat – while a thin board dries quickly like a cooking a thinner steak, these substantial pieces need extensive time, similar to a thick roast. Rushing the drying process in a kiln often leaves moisture trapped in the center, just like an undercooked roast. That trapped moisture leads to warping, cracking, and twisting over time.

About the tag – Clorox Makes Linens More Than White… It Makes Them Sanitary. LOL. I named it Clorox Clean, but that phrase might actually be newer than this advertisement from the 1953 edition of the Farm Journal.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
