Product Description

This White Oak Mantel with Wild Grains brings a warm, natural character to the heart of the room. Crafted from solid white oak, this mantel highlights bold grain movement, organic knots, and a beautifully honest surface that feels both rustic and refined. Its long, clean lines let the wood do the talking, while the lively grain pattern adds depth, texture, and one-of-a-kind charm.

This piece is a wonderful choice for anyone who appreciates the quiet strength of real wood and the beauty of natural variation. Finished to showcase the white oak’s rich tone and striking figure, it pairs easily with modern, farmhouse, or classic interiors. The result is a mantel that feels timeless, grounded, and full of character.

Notice the original angled cut on the left end — a genuine artifact of its past life as a structural beam. We can mirror that same angle on the right end for a perfectly balanced, intentional look that celebrates the wood’s history rather than hiding it. (Or we can cut it straight if you’d like as well).

  • This white oak mantel with wild grains is shown as sanded, but no finish has been applied
  • We can preserve the current color or darken with an oil finish.
  • We could darken even further with an application of ammonia; but that would reduce the streaked contrast
  • Left end has an original angle cut. We can match the angle cut or we can cut both ends straight flush.
  • It is currently 5.0in x 7.0in deep x in 60in long (or 56in if straight cut)
  • Sizing (cutting and sanding the ends) as well as finishing are included in the price
  • It ships via UPS Ground for $150

The beams in this mantel came from a truly one-of-a-kind source — a rare octagonal barn built in 1913 outside Glencoe, MN. With later additions expanding its footprint over the decades, this barn had a character all its own. When we reclaimed the wood, it immediately stood out: exceptionally hard, surprisingly heavy, and packed with genuine character — hand-hewn marks, rich color variation, and the density only a century of life can produce. The photos shown here capture this remarkable structure as it stood. Wood this special doesn’t come around twice.

About the tag –”Smiling Jack” a copy of the front cover from the JCPenney book printed by Whitman Publishing Co. It is Big Little Book “Smilin Jack” by Zack Mosley Based on Airplane Comic Strip 1938. The original book was tiny — 2.5in wide by 3.5in tall. The main appeal today is scarcity, especially in decent shape, since these tiny books were cheaply made and heavily handled. A 1938 Penny Book labeled Grounded on a Tropical Shore would be a collectible example of early comic-strip merchandising tied to one of the classic aviation strips. You can find copies of the book on Ebay.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
