Product Description
AVAILABLE. Gorgeous Log Cabin Timber
This white oak mantel comes from a log cabin built in La Crosse, Wisconsin in the mid to late 1800s. Original settlers of the American West constructed the cabin. Local lore suggests the owner’s grandfather recalled seeing Native Americans in the area. The wood displays incredible color and grain patterns. We preserved the log’s natural live edge on the face. The bottom surface is filled with ax marks, testaments to its history. The original log measured about 6 inches thick, but we trimmed it to almost 4 inches. We flattened the top for easy decorating. At first, we almost overlooked this piece, thinking it looked like junk. But with careful work, we revealed its true beauty. This mantel now stands as a stunning blend of history and craftsmanship.
- This white oak log cabin mantel has some nice dimensions. It is 3.75in tall x 7.75 to 9.5 or so deep x 61.5 inches long.

- It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150
About the Tag: Witt’s Bockwurst – an early rendition of beer brats made with bock beer. With all of the German heritage in Minnesota and Wisconsin, beer has always been popular. Costco currently has bratwurst for $3.28 a pound, so it’s been a while since they 58 cents a pound — probably 40s or 50s. Witt’s Market House stopped operating in 1968. The building remains at the intersection of 7th Street and Hennepin Avenue South in Minneapolis. You can still see it standing there today. There are some cool pictures of Witt’s on Lileks website. Be sure to follow through several pages.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
