Product Description

Exact one sold. More available from the same barn.

This salvaged wood mantel showcases the incredible craftsmanship of early 1900s barn builders. The piece, known as a post cap or post saddle, originally sat atop a barn post, providing support for the main horizontal beam above. You can see one of these pieces in its original setting in the barn before dismantling, highlighting its authentic heritage. The distinct shape and chamfered edges of this salvaged wood mantel demonstrate the care and pride the old craftsmen took in their work. They created functional pieces with artistic flair, even for parts hidden in the barn’s lower structure. This salvaged wood mantel serves as a testament to the skill and attention to detail prevalent in bygone eras. It brings a piece of that rich history and craftsmanship into modern homes, allowing us to appreciate the artistry of early 20th-century barn construction.

  • This salvaged wood mantel has been sanded, but no finish coat has been applied, yet.
Pictures toward the end show what a hard wax oil finish will tend toward, but we can keep it lighter as well — whichever you like.
Complete finishing is included on the price of this one.
  • The metal bolts can be re-inserted or left out. We can brush and finish those up nicely as well.
  • The hole in the bottom will be filled with a nice, original end-grain fill as well.
  • It is currently 7in tall x 9in deep x 60in long. We could cut the depth…and maybe the thickness a little.
  • It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via UPS for $150

The old barn stood near a town called New Germany in Minnesota. Many people who came from Germany settled in this area. They named their new towns to remind them of their homeland. The barn was likely built in the early 1900s. You could tell this from how the wood was cut and the straight, non-hip roofline. The bottom part of the barn was made almost completely from white oak lumber that was probably sawn on-site.

About the tag – We stumbled upon a book full of old Comic Book covers. This one is The Brave and The Bold #1, copyright 1955 DC Comics. The comic book series spanned nearly 200 issues and ran up to 1983. If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon a very good-condition copy of this comic, you’d be looking at something like $1500.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
