Product Description
A very pleasant natural accent beam for a contemporary setting.
This hand-hewn rustic fireplace mantel beam features a somewhat unusual 6 ½ x 6 ½ inch dimension (usually hewn pieces run bigger). Currently measuring a bit over six feet in length, it can be cut down to suit your specific needs. The beam showcases very pleasant hand-hewing craftsmanship without any mortise pockets, preserving its clean, rustic appearance. This is indeed the real thing dating back to the mid- to late-1800s. To enhance its durability and ease of maintenance, it has been finished with a hand-rubbed hard wax, ensuring simple cleaning while maintaining its natural charm. The wax finish creates this really nice, touchable feel.
- This rustic fireplace mantel is completely finished.
- It is currently 6.5 inches tall x 6.5 inches deep x 74 inches long.
- It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via UPS for $125
This source wood came from our Amish wood vendor located in the picturesque rolling hills of Wisconsin. We have deeply enjoyed working with him and his family. The wood business that he grew over the years is now primarily being worked by his sons. This exact piece came from a barn in Wisconsin, probably dating back to the late 1800s. By 1900, sawmills were abundant and people rarely hand-hewed beams anymore.
About the tag – Corn King Mineral Feed from The Shores Company. This advertisement is for corn-based animal feed with additional minerals to improve livestock health. While the history is not clear, it looks like there is a adjacent company called the Shores-Muller Company which was also located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There is a great Home Doctor and Cook Book from Shores company in 1913 currently on Ebay.
More Mantel Inventory
You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
