There’s something special about wood that’s already lived a full life before it gets to you, and this beam is a perfect example. Worked up from old white oak barn beam, you can still trace the circular sawmill marks across the face — a hundred years old and still visible, like a fingerprint from another era. It’s the kind of detail you can’t fake, and it’s honestly our favorite part.

Rather than squaring everything off, the original sawyers sides flat and let naturally curved edges in order to get the most out of the tree. Those edged remain to highlight that live, tree-like silhouette instead of looking overly refined. Along those same edges, streaks of lighter sapwood show up beautifully against the darker heartwood, giving the whole piece a warm, layered look.

Then there’s the character that only time can add — deep, solid cracks running along the grain, a couple of knot holes marking where branches once grew, and a scattering of nail holes across the face that hint at whatever structure this timber called home before it found its way to you.

History – This beam has real roots — sourced from a barn near New Prague, Minnesota, a town that proudly celebrates its immigrant heritage alongside neighbors like New Germany, Hamburg, Cologne, and Green Isle. We photographed the barn in full before it was ever dismantled, preserving its story. With no mortise pockets, this timber was likely a sill beam, originally over 12 feet long and probably already cut down once before. From there, it’s been through hours of sanding, brushing, and careful cleaning to bring out its natural beauty. What started as a humble barn beam is now ready for a second life, ready to stand proudly in your home for decades to come.

About the tag – DMC Thread advertisement from the early 1900s. DMC was founded in 1746 in Mulhouse, Franceby Jean-Henri Dollfus, Jean-Jacques Schmalzer, and Samuel Koechlin, originally to produce Indian print fabrics. It didn’t become known for thread until the 19th century, adding sewing thread production by 1841. The DMC brand is still active today, making it roughly 280 years old — one of the oldest continuously operating textile companies in the world.
