Product Description
Smooth Top and Bottom; Hewn Face Mantel
This stunning Reclaimed Wood Mantel Piece features beautifully light-colored American Elm that brings airy elegance to any space. The unique design perfectly balances old and new—clean-cut top and bottom edges paired with a wonderfully textured rough-hewn face. It’s the ideal marriage of historic character and modern sensibility!
The hand-hewn surface tells a fascinating story: you can actually see where two craftsmen worked side-by-side about 150 years ago, one swinging their ax at an angle while another worked more upright. These differeing tool marks create captivating dimensional texture that catches light throughout the day, making your mantel a living piece of history.
Free of mortise pockets, this piece offers uninterrupted beauty while maintaining its authentic roots. A few original nail holes and bolt holes grace the top and bottom—subtle reminders of this wood’s previous life and honest proof of its reclaimed heritage.
The transformation is truly remarkable! Check out the before photos showing the weathered gray beam we started with, then see the gorgeous piece it became after careful sanding. That dramatic change reveals the breathtaking natural beauty hidden beneath decades of patina.
This Reclaimed Wood Mantel Piece doesn’t just anchor your fireplace—it bridges centuries of craftsmanship, bringing warmth, texture, and timeless appeal to your home!

This extraordinary piece comes with a wonderful heritage! Sourced from our Amish wood supplier in Wisconsin’s rolling hills, it embodies generations of craftsmanship and family tradition. We’ve cherished our relationship with this Amish family over the years, now witnessing his sons continue the business their father established. This very beam was reclaimed from a historic late 1800s Wisconsin barn—authentic American frontier history, hand-hewn in an era before sawmills became common after 1900.
About the tag – “Pussy Willow” comes from the 1962 children’s book Colors are Nice by Adelaide Holl, published as a Little Golden Book. I have fond memories of a five-foot shelf packed with Little Golden Books during my childhood. I think those books are still packed away in the basement somewhere.
More Mantel Inventory
You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
