Product Description

Little natural colored hand-hewn white oak fireplace mantel. This little piece has an original 1800s vintage hand-hewn front and bottom with a cut top.

This mantel was sourced from an exceptional batch of wood. It is a 5.5-foot piece from a beam that was over 30-feet in length. What makes this piece particularly unique is that it was quartersawn at such a large size. Typically, beams are cut with the tree’s heart centered in the beam, but in this case, the heart is located on the corner of the beam. This beam was one of a group of four in total that were cut from the same tree trunk. At 30 feet in the air, the original tree was over 20in in diameter!

This beautiful little piece hosts quartersawn tiger strips running across the face as well as some original nail holes. The top and bottom also have nice character and a pleasant warm color.

From the history we were able to gather, the home from which this beam was salvaged belonged to a relative of one of the founders of the town – Sudheimer – of Waconia, Minnesota. One member of the family-owned the local sawmill, which may explain the use of high-quality wood in the construction of the house. This stands in contrast to the use of quick-grown pine in modern construction. The home was one of the last original farmhouses in Waconia, which has since become a suburb of Minneapolis.

We can cut this mantel shorter and refinish the ends for an additional for no additional cost.

It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
