Product Description

SOLD to Ashley M. 08/13/2024

We crafted this reclaimed lumber mantel by cutting the top and bottom to fit modern spaces. The face displays vintage ax marks from the late 1800s, lending authenticity, history, and character to the piece. A sequence of peg holes along the top once held the rungs of a barn ladder. The light natural white oak color blends seamlessly into contemporary environments. Our cuts on the top and bottom give this mantel a refined feel, balancing its rustic old origins with modern aesthetics.

  • This reclaimed lumber mantel has been sanded, but no finish coat has been applied. Final finishing is included in the price.
We can preserve this nice natural oak color, or the piece will naturally go darker with our typical, high-end Rubio Monocoat finish.
  • It is currently 5.5 x 6.5 x 64.5 inches long, we can cut to size at no additional charge.
  • It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

The original barn was located in West Bend, Wisconsin — just north of Milwaukee. West Bend was founded in 1845 and the railroad came in 1873 — so it was relatively early in America’s Westward expansion. With the hand-hewn character, this barn likely dated back to the 1860s or 1870s. With the expansion of the railroad, surely there were sawmills as well. Can you imagine, the ax-marked face is likely over 150 years old?

About the tag – Sphohn’s Udder Aid. An advertisement from a 1943 edition of The Farmer newsletter. LOL. When I was in high school, we used this stuff to help heal our blistered hands in gymnastics — even though it was for veterinary use only.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
