Product Description
If you’re looking for a fireplace mantel that tells a story, this Reclaimed Barn Beam Mantel is about as honest as wood gets. Salvaged from an old barn and carefully skinned to reveal what’s hiding underneath the weathered exterior, this piece is loaded with the kind of character that simply cannot be manufactured.
Let’s talk about what makes this one special: it’s White Oak, and White Oak loves to show off. You’ll notice the color shifts and dances across the face of the beam — warm tawny golds, soft tans, hints of amber — all woven together by the natural grain of a tree that spent decades doing its job before it came to us. That color variation isn’t a flaw; it’s the whole point.
And then there’s everything else going on. Bug holes? Yep — scattered across the surface like tiny pinpricks of history. Don’t let those give you a second thought. These could easily be a century old, and every piece we sell has been kiln-dried, so whatever lived in this wood long ago is ancient history. Those little holes are just part of the charm. Add in the hairline cracks running along the grain, the knots that remind you this was once a living, growing tree, and the occasional nail hole left behind by whoever originally built with this beam — this mantel has lived a full life, and it shows.
“Skinning” the beam is what really unlocked its personality. By carefully removing the rough outer layer, we exposed the color and grain underneath — cleaner to the touch, but still completely, unapologetically rustic. It’s the best of both worlds: refined enough to work above your fireplace, raw enough to keep things interesting.
One thing worth mentioning: I’d honestly consider giving this one a light ammonia treatment before installation. The natural contrast between the lights and darks is striking right now, and ammonia would just mellow things out a touch — evening the tones into something a little more unified and rich. Totally optional, but worth considering if you want a slightly more cohesive, antique feel.
This is a mantel that anchors a room. Whether your space leans farmhouse, modern rustic, or anywhere in between, this Reclaimed Barn Beam Mantel brings genuine history to your hearth — no imitation, no shortcuts, just real wood with a real past.
As a fun little bonus, the photos give you a peek at this beam exactly as it came to us — straight from the barn, before we touched it. There’s also a few pictures of the original barn.

This beam came from an early 1900s barn near New Germany, Minnesota — a region rich with immigrant heritage, surrounded by towns like New Ulm, Hamburg, and Green Isle that proudly wear their Old World roots. Tucked away in the barn’s basement, this beam was never meant to be the star of the show. But after hours of careful sanding, brushing, and cleaning, it’s had a remarkable second act. We were lucky enough to document the whole barn before it came down — and now this piece is ready to anchor your home for generations to come.
About the tag – Every mantel gets a unique label, and this one happens to be a great one — a cover print of The Silver Surfer #14, March 1970, Marvel Comics. This is the iconic issue where the Silver Surfer faces off against Spider-Man, illustrated by the legendary John Buscema. A fitting tag for a piece with this much character — two classics, each with a story worth telling.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.

Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
