This mantel has a wonderful balance between the modern natural white oak mantel trends and old historic hewn pieces. It is an authentic, mid-1800s hand-hewn vintage barn beam from when the original settlers came across the American landscape. The top has been cut smooth showing off some quartersawn oak tiger stripes. There is one pocket in the face and one on the bottom, but both have been filled nicely. These pockets are a testament to the original history of this piece. It also has nice sting of nail holes gracing the bottom side. Again… history.

White oak has these great, natural warm neutrals that everyone is looking for to give us that cozy feel.

  • This beam has been sanded, but no finish coat applied. We’ll be happy to finish as needed. We can keep the current color or darken for $75.
  • It is currently 6.5in tall x 7in deep x 58.5in long, we can cut to size at no additional charge.
  • We could cut the top and/or bottom to make it thinner or perhaps give it a more contemporary feel.

We’ve put considerable time and effort to preserving this natural white oak mantel, but we’re simply the most recent stewards in their long history. Nature and the original craftsmen laid the groundwork long before us. These exceptional timbers are truly remarkable, but they’re becoming increasingly rare. We’re fortunate to salvage and repurpose each one while we still can.

This beam originated from an old barn in Lowell, Wisconsin, a small town situated roughly 50 miles northwest of Madison. The barn’s construction likely dates back to the mid or late 19th century, coinciding with the westward expansion of American settlers. Given this timeline, the beam itself probably dates to the 1860s or 1870s. Interestingly, if you were to count the growth rings in the wood, you might discover that the tree from which this beam was cut began its life as far back as the 1700s!

We can cut this mantel shorter and refinish the ends for an additional for no additional cost.

It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

About the tag – The Woman Who Used Here Head was from a 1950s vintage children’s book filled with folktales.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
