This is a lovely, stout little mantel. It sanded up nicely to create a wonderful, natural color. Currently, it does not have any finish applied. It can be left in its current state, but it runs the risk of staining or becoming too dirty. To maintaina similar color and make it easier to clean, we can apply a Briwax finish. On the other hand, to bring out wonderful warm, saddle brown hues, we could apply our standard Rubio Monocoat Finish. The first 15 or so pictures show the mantel without any finish applied while the last few pictures show the mantel with mineral spirits splashed on, which approximates the look of a Rubio Monocoat finish.

This piece is cut on both the top and bottom side to provide a little cleaner, more contemporary look but it still showcases a great, vintage hand-hewn face. The ax marks, dating back to the late 1800s, are a testament to the hard work of pioneers who settled in central Minnesota. It also features a filled mortise pocket on the top, which is a remnant of its original use as a beam in a barn.

he barn from which this piece was sourced was situated near New Prague, Minnesota, a town known for its celebration of its immigrant heritage, like many other towns in the area such as New Germany, Hamburg, Cologne, and Green Isle. We were fortunate to have taken a complete set of pictures of the barn. This particular beam was likely unremarkable in its original form, hidden in the basement of the barn. However, through hours of sanding, brushing, and cleaning, it has undergone a remarkable transformation — ready for another couple of decades in your home.
