Product Description

This reclaimed, hewn white oak mantel brings history to your home. We started with an old barn beam dating back to the late 1800s. The hewing marks on the face are very pleasantly mild, preserving the wood’s character while giving it a almost smooth finish. Look closely and you’ll spot an original wooden peg hole on the lower right, a testament to old-world craftsmanship. The bottom edge features a gentle, tree-like rounding, echoing the beam’s natural tree-like shape. We’ve kept a pocket in the bottom of the piece, a mark of its past use, but don’t worry – we’ll fill it for you. The top has a little more choppy ax work. This mantel combines rustic charm with practical function, ready to become the centerpiece of your fireplace.

  • This hewn white oak mantel has been sanded, but no finish coat applied. We can sell as-is for $600 or we can finish for an additional $75.
We can preserve this nice natural oak color, or the piece will naturally go very dark with our typical, high-end Rubio Monocoat finish. (see last picture with simulated finish).
  • It is currently 60in long, we can cut to size at no additional charge.
  • We could cut the top and bottom to make it thinner or perhaps give it a more contemporary feel.

We bought the source wood beam from an Amish man in Southwest Wisconsin. He took it from an old weather barn built in the late 1800s. This area has many rolling hills. These hills remind us of simpler times. Back then, cows roamed freely and farming was done with care. It’s very different from modern farms in Minnesota, where many cows live in crowded metal sheds. This region brings back memories of my childhood. I used to see farming as a balance between nature and people. These old barns are disappearing fast. All too soon, all of the good ones will be gone.

It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

About the tag – Egg-O-Day is an advertisement from a 1943 copy of The Farmer magazine. We’re a little spoiled to be able to hop online and get something the next day. I remember doing correspondence via postal mail and waiting weeks for a product to arrive.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
