Product Description

Hand-hewn face AND clean lines

This gorgeous little white oak fireplace mantel beautifully marries historical charm with contemporary elegance! The hand-hewn face from the late 1800s showcases authentic ax-work with delightful character marks that tell stories of skilled craftsmen from generations past. Rich, warm earth tones flow across the wood’s surface, creating an inviting palette that complements any décor. The pleasant natural character on the face adds just the right amount of rustic charm without overwhelming the space—those gentle tool marks and natural variations speak to authenticity while maintaining sophisticated restraint. Thoughtfully cut top and bottom edges create clean lines that seamlessly blend with modern environments, making this antique treasure perfectly at home in today’s streamlined interiors. It’s the ideal fusion of old-world soul and contemporary style!

  • Technically, this one is actually RED oak; but we pre-treated it to remove the red tones and provide the color palette of white oak. Looking at the photo, I missed it until I noticed an earlier picture when it was still raw.
  • This solid wood mantel piece has been finished with our proprietary natural-color undercoat and a wonderful feeling BriWax top coat.
  • It is currently 4.0 in tall x 6.125 inches deep x 51 inches long. We can cut down in size at no additional charge.
  • The ends are currently un-finished, waiting to be re-sized. We’ll take care of that.
  • The mantel can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $125

This remarkable piece carries a beautiful heritage story! Sourced from our Amish wood vendor in Wisconsin’s rolling hills, it represents generations of craftsmanship and family tradition. We’ve treasured working with our Amish friend and his family over the years, now watching as his sons carry forward the business he built. This exact beam was reclaimed from a historic Wisconsin barn dating to the late 1800s—a true piece of American frontier history with hand-hewn during an era before sawmills became widespread after 1900.

About the tag – The Headman. We found this image in a modern print of an Alice in Wonderland book. Little did I know that the illustrations actually date back to a card game based on the original designs by Sir John Tenniel that was first published in c.1898. John Tenniel had been commissioned to produce illustrations for a new book titled “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), published by Macmillan & Co in 1865. The illustrations from the 1896 edition of the book were used for the De la Rue card game, after being adapted by E. Gertrude Thomson.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
