Product Description
Some pieces of wood just stop you in your tracks, and this little Floating Fireplace Mantel is one of them.
What makes it so special? That grain. We’re talking about a rare “curly” — sometimes called “quilted” — figure that ripples across the surface like silk caught in a breeze. In all our years of pulling apart old barns and salvaging reclaimed timber, we’ve only come across this kind of figure in a handful of beams. And honestly, that makes sense — back when this wood was cut, probably a century ago, nobody was selecting trees for their good looks. This was structural lumber, plain and simple. Built to hold something up, not to sit above a fireplace and make a room feel like a million bucks. So when nature decided to throw in a spectacular grain pattern? That was just a happy accident nobody noticed for a hundred years.
You’ll also spot some nail holes — they are little punctuation marks from a past life. We love those. They’re honest. They tell you this beam did something before it found its way to you, and they add just the right amount of character without ever feeling rough or unrefined.
Despite all that reclaimed history, the lines are clean, straight, and genuinely contemporary. No rustic-gone-too-far. Just a confident, minimal floating shelf silhouette that would look right at home above a sleek gas fireplace in a modern living room or tucked into a cozy cottage den.
It’s a cute little piece — compact, charming, and completely one-of-a-kind. Once it’s gone, it’s gone, because there simply isn’t another beam out there with this exact story written into its grain.
Details
- This Floating Fireplace Mantel is shown as sanded, but no finish has been applied
- Technically, this one is Red (not white) Oak but very few people could tell the difference. The color is very similar to that of white oak.
- We can preserve the current color or darken with an oil finish. (see medium dark sample picture at end)
- We could probably go even darker, but we might lose the cool grains.
- It is currently 5.125 tall x 5.675 deep x up to 60in long
- If needed, sizing (cutting and sanding the ends) as well as finishing are included in the price
- It ships via UPS Ground for $125
History – This beam came out of a barn sitting right along Hwy 284, in the heart of some of the most charming small-town Minnesota you’ll ever find — tucked between Waconia, with its gorgeous lake, and Cologne, surrounded by neighbors like New Germany, Green Isle, and New Prague, towns that still wear their heritage proudly. As a sawn beam, it dates post-1900, when portable sawmills became available, cutting timber right on-site from whatever trees the land offered up. Honest, local, and built to last a century.
About the tag – What you’re looking at is a vintage Pepsodent toothbrush coupon. Pepsodent has been around since 1915, originally making toothpaste famous through clever radio advertising, but branched into toothbrushes mid-century. That retro heart graphic and “Two for 98¢” pricing puts this label squarely in the 1960s — but the wood itself is almost certainly decades older than that.
More Mantel Inventory
You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.

Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
