Product Description
Nice long white oak hand hewn mantel.
This stunning extra-long hand hewn oak mantel stretches an impressive 83-103 inches, making it perfect for grand fireplaces! Salvaged as a rafter plate (you can see the angled notches for the rafters) from a late 1800s barn in Wisconsin, it showcases beautiful, clean hand-hewn surfaces on all three visible sides with subtle ax marks that tell its authentic story. The gorgeous natural color can be preserved with our standard finish, or transformed to rich, deep tones with hard wax oil. Original notches face the wall and will be expertly filled for a seamless installation. The face is completely clean with no mortise pockets, and if cut to 83in or less, it have pocket-free top and bottom surfaces too. While we typically don’t pre-finish these extra-long mantels, we keep plenty in stock ready to customize to your vision. This exceptional beam combines remarkable length with outstanding craftsmanship – a true centerpiece that brings warmth and character to any space while preserving a piece of American history.

This particular timber originated from our Amish supplier nestled in Wisconsin’s gentle countryside. Our partnership with him and his family has been truly rewarding over the years. The business he built is now largely in the capable hands of his sons. This specific beam was salvaged from a Wisconsin barn, likely constructed in the closing decades of the 19th century. By the turn of the century, mechanized sawmills had become commonplace, making the art of hand-hewn timber increasingly rare.
About the tag –Old King Cole. Old King Cole was a merry old soul. And a merry old soul was he. He called for his pipe, He called for his bowl, And he called for his fiddlers three. This image comes from a relatively modern book of nursery rhymes. The rhyme reportedly dates back to approximately 1708 – 1709. While it probably references a real historical figure, the exact reference is unknown.

Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
