Product Description

Hand Hewn Mantel with Cut Top and Bottom

This beautiful solid ash wood mantel perfectly blends rustic authenticity with contemporary style through its original hewn face with cut top and bottom surfaces. The combination creates an “authentic yet clean” aesthetic that enhances modern living spaces while celebrating traditional craftsmanship. The top and bottom surfaces feel smooth to the touch, while the face retains its original textured character that adds historical charm. This exceptional piece serves as a stunning focal point that successfully bridges traditional woodworking heritage with today’s refined home designs.

  • This solid wood mantel piece has been sanded, but no finish coat has been applied. Final finishing is included in the price.
We can preserve this nice natural ash color, or the piece will naturally go darker with our typical, high-end Rubio Monocoat finish.
  • It is currently 5.25in tall x 7.25 inches deep x 61 inches long. It is actually 78 inches long, but there is a curving on the end that is probably best removed. It is priced at 61in, but we can cut to size at no additional charge.
  • The ends are currently un-finished, waiting to be re-sized. We’ll take care of that.
  • The side with the large cracks was the intended back. However, we could finish it and you could use it as a visible side.
  • The mantel can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

This remarkable mantel shelf was carefully reclaimed from a historic granary near Hamburg, Minnesota, where it originally served as a support beam for the 2nd floor. Through lots of cleaning and sanding, we preserved this beautiful piece by salvaging the solid, sound wood that tells the story of Minnesota’s rich agricultural heritage. The included photographs showcase the original granary structure, connecting this mantel directly to the German immigrants who built these sturdy buildings during the 1880s immigration wave that brought nearly 1.5 million people to America. This reclaimed mantel brings that enduring legacy of quality craftsmanship directly into your home, making it both a beautiful architectural element and a genuine piece of American immigrant history.

About the tag – Rain is a line from the 1962 Children’s Book Colors are Nice. It was written by Adelaide Holl and published as a Little Golden Book. I remember a 5ft shelf filled with Little Golden Books when I was a kid.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
