Product Description
Every so often, a piece surprises you — and this one truly did. Resawn from log cabin timber, this beam looked pretty rough and weathered when we first pulled it aside; honestly, we weren’t sure there was anything salvageable inside. But once we got into it, we uncovered a genuinely stunning piece of what we like to call “Nature’s Art.” We’d love to take credit for it, but this masterpiece belongs entirely to time and nature.
This Artistic White Oak Fireplace Mantel is bursting with character — dramatic cracks wind their way across the surface, paired with rich, natural color variation that shifts and flows like a painting. Add in scattered man-made nail holes and old hand hewn marks, and you’ve got a beam that tells a layered story of both human hands and the passage of time.
This particular piece came from a late 1800s cabin near Prior Lake, Minnesota, so along with its beauty, it carries genuine Midwestern history with it.
One-of-a-kind, artistic, and full of soul — this mantel is a conversation piece the moment it’s installed.

History – This beam has quite the journey behind it. It came from an old log cabin dating back to the late 1800s near Prior Lake, Minnesota — remarkably, the cabin was lived in as a full-time home all the way until the early 2000s! It was eventually removed so the landowners could build a new house on the site. From there, this particular stick of timber sat quietly in our shop for nearly two decades, simply because we weren’t quite sure what to do with it. But every once in a while, patience pays off — talk about finding a pearl in an oyster!
About the tag – An old woman is baking bread when a traveler (sometimes described as Christ, sometimes as St. Peter) comes to her door begging for food. She begins to bake him a small loaf, but each time she shapes the dough it grows too large, and she keeps making it smaller and smaller out of stinginess, until the loaf is tiny. Angered by her selfishness, the traveler curses her, and she flies up the chimney transformed into a woodpecker — forever doomed to peck at trees for her food instead of sharing bread with others.

Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.

Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
