Product Description

AVAILABLE. Hewn Face and Bottom. Cut Top. Oak.

A somewhat rare find – this 10-inch deep mantel hosts that hard-to-find, shelf-like size. Its face and bottom feature original hand-hewn surfaces from an 1800s vintage barn. We cut the top flat for easy decorating. The wood boasts a beautiful warm brown color. The front face looks especially pretty, which matters most since it’s the most visible side. A few old nails peek through on the top and bottom, adding authentic charm. The top surface shows off quartersawn oak tiger stripes. The back bottom edge has a rounded, tree-like shape, but this mostly hides after installation. The bottom side has a little more character, but these straight-on pictures are a bit unfair. The mantel will never be seen in this perspective. This mantel is a real piece of American history.

  • This reclaimed, hand hewn white oak mantel has a Rubio Monocoat finish applied.
  • The thickness is about 4.75 and the depth is about 10.25 inches.
  • It is currently 62in long, we can cut to size at no additional charge.

We bought this wood beam from an Amish man in Southwest Wisconsin. He salvaged it from an old weather barn built in the late 1800s. Rolling hills define this area’s landscape. These hills remind us of a simpler past. Cows once grazed freely here, and farmers tended their land with care. This scene contrasts sharply with modern Minnesota farms, where metal sheds house hundreds of cows. The region stirs memories of my childhood. I once saw farming as a harmony between nature and humans. The old hand-hewn barns from the 1800s are vanishing quickly as they are just not needed anymore. It is sad to see.

It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
