Product Description
Wood beam mantel with nail holes, cracks, saw marks, and vintage charm
This wood beam mantel is a slice of history, crafted from authentic white oak that’s seen nearly a century of stories. Its face is a tapestry of nail holes, deep cracks, wonderful color variations, and subtle, original circle saw marks—each one adding character and proof of its vintage roots. Once part of a 1920s barn as an upright post, this piece still bears evidence of the barn siding that was nailed to it long ago.
We’ve refined the top and bottom with clean cuts for a sleek, modern appeal, letting the real, timeworn personality shine right where it matters most — on the face. There’s a solid crack running along the top, about an inch deep, but after installation it typically stays out of sight most of the time—just like some sapwood color changes and a bit of wane on the back bottom edge. These natural touches are rarely seen but further confirm its reclaimed, genuine nature.
The face is the star here—striking, full of contrast, and ready to become the centerpiece in any room. This wood beam mantel brings real warmth and authenticity, pairing beautifully with both new construction and modern environments looking for a connection to the past. It’s all about that face: genuine, storied, and truly gorgeous.

This reclaimed wood beam mantel was pulled from an old barn in Minnesota, where family farms began to shape the landscape in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The area is rich in heritage, with many original settlers being German immigrants whose craftsmanship and farming traditions still influence the region today. Each piece carries a bit of that local history, bringing the spirit of Minnesota’s pioneering families right into your home.
About the tag –This is a picture from an old book of fairy tales. The fairy tale “A Legend of the Northland” tells how a selfish old woman, baking cakes, refused to share with a hungry traveler. As punishment, she was transformed into a woodpecker—forever pecking at trees for food instead of enjoying baked treats. That’s how, according to legend, the first woodpecker came to be.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
