Product Description

10/4/2023 – Sold to Rick B from South Dakota

Great looking rustic fireplace mantel. This particular mantel piece has a very pleasant hand hewn character with generally clean lines. It is free of pockets on all sides. It has a cut top, which gives it a little more contemporary look as well a a nice flat surface for decorating with family photos, vases, and other items.

Like all of our mantels, this piece speaks, “authenticity.” This is not a modern piece of pine that was hewn this year. All the choppy-ness is from a guy swinging an ax well over 100 years ago. Based on the location of where this piece came from, it might even be 150 years or more ago that was hewn. This rustic fireplace mantel is also oak — probably white oak. Sometimes the Red Oak and White Oak get little difficult to distinguish from each other.

This piece has been hand sanded and worked for hours to create an exceptional piece. It has not been stained. We applied a Rubio Monocoat finish to bring out the richness of the original patina. It is currently 5.5in tall x 8in deep x 78in long. We can cut this mantel shorter and refinish the ends for an additional for no additional cost.

This rustic fireplace mantel was one of several beams that came from a batch from Red Wing, Minnesota. We really don’t have much information about the original building. However, Red Wing was one of the early cities in Minnesota as it rests on the edge of the Mighty Mississippi river. Steamboats frequently traveled to the area on the 1850s. Sawmills were also established early. It is very likely that this piece was originally cut and hewn closer to the mid-1800s, rather than the late-1800s like much of our hand-hewn material.

It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150

About the tag – ACME 5-Minute Ice Cream Freezer. This is an advertisement that dates back to the nineteen-teens to nineteen-twenties. A quick little search on Google pops up lots of these antiques for sale for about $40-$60. In the 1920s, the ACME name was often used so that a company would show up early in the phone book. So yes, the ACME company is not just a piece of Road Runner cartoon fiction.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
