Here’s a nice, very simple reclaimed Black Ash barn beam mantel. It is free of any man-made mortise pockets or the like on all 3 visible sides. At the right viewing angle, you can see the ghosts of the old circle saw marks. Back in the day, they would bring portable sawmills, like the one in the ad, on-site to cut the required lumber. You can see the big saw blade that left its mark on this old beam.

sawmill-sm On the mantel face, about 6 inches from the left end, you can also see the ghost of another board that was nailed to this beam. It is just a subtle color variation and some nails holes, but a testament to the original use, nevertheless. There are some mild cracks throughout. But this old wood is dry. It has pretty much done all of the cracking and twisting that it is going to do.

Note, the depth is off by about 3/8 of an inch from end to end. (From 8in to 8 3/8 inches)

This mantel beam came from an early 1900s vintage barn between Norwood, MN and Green Isle, MN. About 40 miles SW of Minneapolis downtown. This is the beginning of farm country. The soil here is rich and black and runs black as deep as three feet. This was the Western edge of the Big Woods if you are familiar with the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. The barn roof had caved in during the winter of 2015. Our old friend, Harry, who is in 60s salvaged what he could from the old barn before the rest was burned to the ground.

This beam is priced at $100/LF. The beam is 67 inches long and priced as such ($558). We can also cut the beam down to any length and reduce the price by $8.33 per inch, up to a maximum discount of $100. We can ship this one via FedEx Gnd. We use a flat rate of $65 for all mantels that ship via FedEx. If you’d like it cut down, please contact us at antiqueww@gmail.com or call 612-281-9330.

The Tag — Ifra-Red Ray Lamp. This ad dates back to the late 1940s. Gotta love the little K-M Genie. They had some cute illustrations back in the day.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
