Product Description

ON HOLD for BEN. (7/6/2016). Please contact us before adding to cart.
This is just a really beautiful hand hewn mantel shelf. It started out as an 8×11 hand hewn monster sized beam. We cut it in half — making a more practical shelf and revealing a wonderful interior. The left end has some character that was once rotten. We cleaned that up. The top shows off lighter, interior wood color. We could darken that up if you’d like. The mantel top is also highlighted with lots of tiger stripes and fleck associated with quarter sawn oak. Dating back to the 1800s, the front and bottom have good strong ax marks. The bottom has fantastic abundance of hand hewing. They are really strong and well done. Imagine, real ax-works from pioneers in your own home. Pretty cool.

In the last picture, you can see what the beams came in like. Barn fresh they call that. Covered in white wash, dirt, grain, and whatever else you might find in a barn. We work our process to bring this great old wood to life. What a transformation!

This mantel beam came from a late 1800s vintage barn near Southwest Wisconsin — out in the beautiful rolling hills.

This beam is priced at $100/LF. We can cut the beam down to any length and reduce the price by $8.33per inch, up to a maximum discount of $100.

Note, you gotta love these old time advertisements. Colgate — Dental Cream with Gardol. I’m not sure when the word toothpaste became ubiquitous. As the Interfaces Blog put it, “Gardol might have disappeared from the drug store ads, but the chemical sodium lauroyl sarcosinate didn’t — today it goes by the name “Advance White” and is part of a very well respected for its natural and health-conscious products”

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
