Product Description

This hand hewn white oak mantel beam sports lots of features on it. The front face has 3 mortise pockets that have been filled. The fills are old white oak with tight, beautiful growth rings. The end-grain is often the prettiest part of the wood. The top has been cut flat — which is great for pictures and knick-knacks. With the cut, we revealed a wonderful streaked white oak. White oak is naturally a wheatish-tan color. However, when the wood sits in a barn environment, it can darken up to nearly a dark roast coffee brown. The dark coloring saturates into the cracks of the wood. When we cut mantel beam, we remove much of the color, but end up with the dark streaks following the old cracks. The top also hosts original peg holes and square nails. Square nails went out about 1900. Besides the ax works, this is another way to date the beam. Finally, the bottom has a nice flowing shape. It has a significant fill in the bottom to cover up an indented mortise pocket. This is where another beam once joined this post. Overall, this is a really a gorgeous beam.

This mantel beam came from a late 1800s vintage barn near Southwest Wisconsin — out in the beautiful rolling hills. It is alway nice to head out to this part of the country. You still see lots of small family farms with animals still out in the parture. It is a welcome relief from the industrial farming that we see in our parts. The last pictures shows some mantel beams in the raw. Pretty amazing transformation!

This beam is priced at $115/LF. We can cut the beam down to any length and reduce the price by $9.58 per inch, up to a maximum discount of $115. At the full size, this one needs to ship LTL truck freight for $150. Cut down a bit, we can probably ship via FedEx Gnd. We use a flat rate of $65 for all mantels that ship via FedEx.

Note, you gotta love these old time advertisements – Certo – liquid Fruit Pectin. Does that look delicious? This ad dates back to the 1950s or so.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
