Great hand hewn character and natural dark color on this fireplace mantel. This piece is one heavy beast. It has a great dark brown color throughout, with a couple of lighter sapwood lines running along the top back and the bottom back. On the bottom right, there is a round impression. I am guessing that this beam was resting hard against something.

We brought in a batch of hand hewn, white oak 8×10 timbers for fireplace mantels. They are incredible. They are full-dimension, heavy monsters. At full size, they are a tad over 200lbs. No wonder I’m feeling it as I move them around the shop. Dating back to the 1800s, all sides have good strong ax marks. The front and top faces have great color and are free of mortise holes. The bottom has a bit more character with 3 filled pockets and the natural heart of the tree cracking through the surface. They make beautiful mantels once finished up.

In the last picture, you can see what the beams came in like. Barn fresh they call that. Covered in white wash, dirt, grain, and whatever else you might find in a barn. We work our process to bring this great old wood to life. What a transformation!

This beam came from a late 1800s vintage barn near Southwest Wisconsin — out in the beautiful rolling hills.

This beam is priced at $125/LF. We can cut the beam down to any length and reduce the price by $10.42 per inch, up to a maximum discount of $125. We have this listed at $150 shipping class. For shipping to most places, that probably under our cost, but we like to keep things simple. We do ask that you have people available to unload from the semi-truck.

Note, you gotta love these old time advertisements. “No Need to Weed” just add some good old American chemicals to your soil. This ad came from the 1950s — the golden age for new chemistry. It was a bit before we had respect and understanding of chemicals can affect our environment.
