There are lots of things going on with this beam mantel. To start, it is red oak. Red oak is a little more prone to rot than other woods we use. In addition, red oak also has a very, very thin patina layer, so it is easy to sand right through it and get to fresh wood. Because of those issues, this beam shows more of the interior character of red oak.

However, there are lots of man-made features. On the face this beam mantel, there are original mortise holes that have been filled. There is also an original peg hole that has been filled with an original peg. The front face has more historic character. The top side has been cut and two mortise holes have been filled with old end-grain plugs. The bottom side is really cool. We cut the beam just right, so that original peg holes were cut in half. We’ve left the peg holes showing but filled the adjoining mortise holes. Those holes were probably drilled over a 100 years ago. Back when pocket change had wheat pennies and buffalo nickels.

This beam came from a small barn near Afton, Minnesota. We get our raw beams from a number of sources. On occasion, we run into some rather unusual characters who supply wood to us. In this case, the beam came from a crazy couple of guys who didn’t have quite the right equipment for barn dismantling. So, they used what they had on hand… a mini-van. They literally yanked the barn down with their mini-van. Probably not the best method, but rather amusing. Sometimes you just shake your head and sigh.

We have already posted this beam on sale for $500. We can cut the beam down and reduce the price by $8.33 per inch up to a $100 discount. Shipping is $65. If you’d like it cut down, please contact us via email at antiqueww@gmail.com or call 888-226-5370.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
