Product Description

There are 3 common types of elm in Minnesota — American (white), Red, and Rock. Rock Elm is virtually unavailable in the modern market. It is just too slow growing. This beam is both Rock Elm and hand hewn.

This stunning mantel beam shows off mostly the nice flowing grain character of Red Elm, but it also has a few hints of the old original ax marks from this 1800s beam. The original beam was a bit rotten and was not showing the great color of red elm. So we sawed ‘er down enough to get through some of the goo. This mantel is actually only a portion of the much larger, 18in beam.

This beam does have great history. It can from a old Norwegian log home near Lanesboro, Minnesota. The Nyhus family settled in Fillmore county in 1880s. The story goes that the house was originally further up the bluff. The farmer was tired of bringing his cows down from the top of the bluff to the river, so they moved the house down the bluff quite a ways. It was an unusual treat to get a picture of the original settler family.

There is a little blog post on our site regarding the newspapers articles that we found insulating the walls of the old house.

I had to laugh. The knot pattern on the top of the mantel looks a little like a Halloween Ghoul.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
