Product Description

This Rustic Fireplace Mantel is the real deal — a hand-hewn beauty pulled straight from a late 1800s barn and packed with the kind of character you simply can’t manufacture. The surface tells its own story: ax marks, pockets and peg holes scattered across the face mark exactly where other timbers once joined this one, locking together a structure that stood for well over a century. We can fill those openings using either accenting end-grain or blending side-grain material — your call. Look closely and you’ll probably spy a square nail, a small piece of days gone by. We’ve cut the top surface flat for better decorating. The bottom side is ever so slightly curved — adding a nice touch. The hewing marks, the worn edges, the patina — it’s all here and it’s all genuine. If you want a mantel that carries real history into your home, this is it.

With pockets on 3 sides, this was an upright post on the side of barn. Beams from 2 sides spanned the walls, another beam went toward the inside of the barn.

There are a couple of pictures toward the end that show the original piece before we removed the pegs and cleaned the pockets. It is actually kind of fun — we’ll usually find old straw and grain mixed in the pockets. You always have to wonder what it was like “back in the day.”

  • This rustic fireplace mantel is shown as sanded, but no finish has been applied
  • We can preserve the current color or darken it with various techniques
(There’s a picture in there that shows mineral spirits splashed on. It is the piece in the middle).
  • Sizing (cutting and sanding the ends) as well as finishing are included in the price
  • We can fill the pockets or leave them open — your call.
  • The ends are not finished yet — we’re just waiting for your final length. We’ll take care of that.
  • At over 9in deep, this is a great, somewhat uncommon depth!
  • It is currently 7.0in to 7.625in tall x 9in deep x 68.5in long
  • We can square up the ends if you’d like for no additional charge
  • It ships via UPS Ground for $150

We sourced this piece from our Amish friends in Wisconsin, and going there is half the joy. Rolling hills, grazing cows, and a pace of life that feels like the world slowed down just enough to get things right. We started working with the father, Abe, years ago, and now his kids have taken the reins. Happy children running around and genuine hospitality is always a treat. It’s a beautiful corner of the world, and every piece we bring back carries a little of that warmth with it. They dismantle some barns themselves as well as gather wood from the “English” who also take down barns in the area. We’d love to see all of these barns saved, but it is just not practical for most farmers to preserve buildings that are no longer in use.

About the tag – “Doll Given” advertisement from a 1922 edition of the Farm Journal. These kinds of ads ran constantly in farm papers, magazines, and Sunday supplements around 1910–1930, offering dolls, knives, or jewelry in exchange for selling subscriptions, ordering a certain product, or sending small sums plus postage. Historians of advertising and toy premiums note that many of these companies really did send the premium, but often of cheaper quality than the illustration implied, and only after the child or parents met sales or payment conditions buried in the fine print.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
