Quick heads up — this one’s still a work in progress, and we wanted to show it to you exactly as it stands right now.

When pioneers were settling this land, sawmills weren’t an option yet, so they squared up round logs the old-fashioned way: with an axe. That process is called hand hewing, and the marks you see across the face of this piece are original, straight from the 1800s. It’s amazing that texture like that survives this long.

We’ve already cut the top and bottom flat to give it a cleaner, more modern silhouette — a nice contrast against all that raw, hand-worked history on the face.

From here, there’s still work to do. At 84 inches long and 6 inches thick, we’re guessing this piece will likely get trimmed down in both length and thickness before it’s finished. The top hasn’t been sanded yet at all, and the bottom still needs some attention too. Don’t worry, though — we’ll handle every bit of that finishing work before it heads your way.

History – This mantel shelf has a great story behind it — reclaimed from a granary near Hamburg, Minnesota, and cut from a large hand-hewn sill timber. Timbers like this often develop some rot over the decades, but by carefully cutting that away, we were able to save this little gem underneath. You’ll spot a few photos of the original granary in the picture set, so you can see exactly where it came from. Hamburg itself has deep German roots, tracing back to the wave of German immigration in the 1880s that brought nearly 1.5 million people to the US. Nearby towns like New Germany, Cologne, and New Ulm carry on that same heritage today.

About the tag – Betty Peeked comes from a mid-century basal reader, likely dating to the 1940s or 1950s — the kind of early elementary textbook used to teach reading through simple, repeated sight words, much like the classic Dick and Jane series. It follows characters Betty and Uncle Bob, brought to life with soft, lithographic-style illustrations typical of publishers like Scott Foresman or Ginn & Co. A charming glimpse into vintage American classrooms.
