Product Description

If you’ve been searching for that perfect centerpiece for your fireplace, this floating fireplace mantel shelf might just be exactly what you’ve been looking for — and trust us, you’re not alone. This style has been very popular lately, and it’s easy to see why.

What makes this mantel so special is how effortlessly it bridges two worlds. It takes the warmth and soul of nearly 150-year-old reclaimed oak and wraps it in a clean, updated silhouette that feels right at home in today’s interiors. Old meets new, and honestly? They get along beautifully.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the shape. The top and bottom of this beam have been cleanly cut to create a more defined rectangular profile — and that intentional choice makes a real difference. Instead of the fully raw, fully rustic look you might expect from antique wood, these straight, crisp lines give the mantel a polished, up-to-date feel that works equally well in a farmhouse, a modern transitional space, or even a more contemporary home.

But don’t worry — the character is absolutely still there. The faces of the beam carry a moderately mild hand-hewn texture that quietly tells the story of where this wood has been. Those gentle tool marks and undulating surfaces are a respectful nod to the craftsmen who worked this timber well over a century ago. It’s not overdone or overly rough — just enough to remind you that this piece has history.

Now here’s one of our favorite details — look at the top and bottom surfaces, and you’ll spot a filled pocket hole — a remnant from the beam’s original life. The old wooden peg has been removed and the void filled, but the “ghost” of where it once lived is still visible. It’s subtle, it’s authentic, and it’s the kind of storytelling detail that makes reclaimed wood so much more interesting than anything you’d find fresh off a mill.

If you’ve been on the fence about going reclaimed, this floating fireplace mantel shelf is a wonderful entry point — familiar enough to feel refined, rustic enough to feel real.

History – Several times a year, we make the drive out to see our dear Amish friends in the rolling hills of Wisconsin — and we look forward to it every time. These are some of the most genuine, big-hearted people you’ll ever meet. Draft horses work the fields, kids wave from passing buggies, and the air smells like fresh timber and open country. They hand-pick only the finest reclaimed oak beams with real pride and care — and that flows into every floating fireplace mantel shelf we make. Deeply grateful for every visit.

About the tag – The mantel label feature the iconic Queen of Hearts from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, first published in 1865, illustrated by the brilliant Victorian artist Sir John Tenniel. His engravings defined how the world visualized Carroll’s characters — and the Queen’s imperious, dramatic point feels like a perfect personality match for a mantel with this much character.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
