Product Description
Some mantels are pretty. This one has presence. This fireplace mantel with metal straps is the kind of piece that stops people in their tracks — and once you learn a little about what went into it, you’ll understand why.
Starting with the wood itself: this is a genuinely hand-hewn, stout white oak beam from the late 1800s, and it shows up to the party with incredible natural character. What makes this particular oak so striking is its color — it has darkened beautifully over its 150-plus years without any stain or artificial treatment. That rich, deep tone is 100% natural, earned through time, and there’s simply no faking it.
The hand-hewn texture on all sides is bold and confident — the kind of hewing that tells you the man swinging that broad axe meant business. Every facet and tool mark is a direct connection to the craftsman who shaped this timber generations ago. It’s raw, it’s honest, and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
Now let’s talk about those straps — because they deserve their own moment. Each hand-hammered iron strap is carefully fitted directly to the mantel by a real blacksmith, one at a time, ensuring a snug, intentional fit that looks like it was always meant to be there. They wrap the beam with a quiet authority that perfectly complements the rugged wood beneath. Our blacksmith uses a coal forge and traditional tools.
And the rings? We didn’t cut any corners here. These are forge-welded rings, made the old way — and if you look closely, you can actually see a faint hint of the weld joint, just like ironwork from back in the day. That’s not a flaw; that’s authenticity. Modern rings are a dime a dozen. These are something else entirely.
Here’s a fun bonus: a stocking rod can be added that slides right through those rings, giving you the most charming, functional holiday display you’ve ever hung stockings from. It’s a detail that makes this mantel genuinely livable, not just beautiful to look at.
Bold wood. Hand-forged iron. A fireplace mantel with metal straps that’s equal parts history and heart.

History – Reclaimed from a historic granary near Hamburg, MN, this gorgeous mantel shelf began life as a 1st-floor sill timber — the very bones of the building! Lovingly cleaned and sanded to bring out its natural beauty, this solid piece carries the spirit of Minnesota’s agricultural roots. Included photos show the original structure, tying this mantel to the German immigrants who raised these sturdy buildings during the 1880s — part of a wave that brought 1.5 million people to America. A true conversation piece and a living slice of history!
About the tag – The “R is for Raccoon” page from The Little Golden ABC, illustrated by Cornelius DeWitt and published in 1951. This charming mid-century illustration — with its rabbit, robin, rooster, raven, and raft — is as much a piece of American childhood as the timber itself.

Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.

Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
