Product Description

The outsides of this beam were just not salvageable, but we knew there was some great wood hidden inside just waiting to become a floating mantel. We re-sawed the outsides off revealing this natural dusty rose color. We went one step further and filled the cracks with epoxy. On the top, you can still see a few hints of the ax marks as well as a set of nail holes running down the center.
This red elm floating mantel has some great dimensions — touching upon that somewhat rare 10in depth. It is currently 5 inches tall x 10 inches deep x 65.5 inches long. We can cut in any dimension.
It currently has no finish applied. We can leave it as-is, or finish it with our special treatment to preserve the very nice, lighter natural color. We can also apply Rubio Monocoat and the final hue should be pretty similar to that warm rusty golden hue in those last few sample pictures in the set. Applying a finish coat costs an additional $75.
As an old, solid wood beam, this floating mantel is what you see is what you get. It should be fully dry and should not change shape, twist, or crack over time. That’s a great advantage to using 125+ year-old wood.
It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $150
This timber came from an original settler log cabin near Annandale, Minnesota. The logs were hidden behind lath-and-plaster walls for decades. Nowadays, many people would be thrilled to have an original log cabin accent wall. What a remarkable piece of history!
About the Tag: Genuine Bayer Aspirin. This advertisement came from a 1922 edition of Farm Life. The patent for Bayer aspirin was on March 6, 1899. I had to laugh, say this one 10 times fast – Monoaceticacidester of Salicylicacid. Sounds comforting, doesn’t it? LOL.
More Mantel Inventory
You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.
However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.
We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.
Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.
Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
