Product Description
This farmhouse fireplace mantel is genuinely a great piece, and it’s easy to see why. The face is hand-hewn, keeping all those deep, ax marks left by hand tools nearly 150 years ago — you can practically picture someone shaping this beam by hand, long before power tools existed. It’s history you can literally run your fingers over.
To balance that raw texture, the top and bottom were given a clean, cut finish, so the beam reads as intentional and updated rather than purely rustic. That combination — rugged face, tidy lines — is exactly what makes it work so well in a modern farmhouse space.
The color is naturally light, almost blonde, which pairs beautifully with today’s brighter, airier farmhouse palettes instead of the darker, heavier tones you’d expect from old barn wood.
What really sets this one apart, though, is the species: Rock Elm. It’s a slow-growing hardwood with gorgeous, tight grain character, and it’s nearly impossible to find on the market today. Getting a piece like this isn’t just rare — it’s a little bit of a find.

History – This beam has real roots — sourced from a barn near New Prague, Minnesota, a town that proudly celebrates its immigrant heritage alongside neighbors like New Germany, Hamburg, Cologne, and Green Isle. We photographed the barn in full before it was ever dismantled, preserving its story. With no mortise pockets, this timber was likely a sill beam, originally over 12 feet long and probably already cut down once before. From there, it’s been through hours of sanding, brushing, and careful cleaning to bring out its natural beauty. What started as a humble barn beam is now ready for a second life, ready to stand proudly in your home for decades to come.
About the tag – 1920’s Sterno Advertisement. This vintage advertisement promotes Sterno Canned Heat, touting it as a handy little stove that “heats anything” — perfect for cooking delicious dishes, warming baby’s milk, and boiling coffee anywhere, even on the trail. Sterno Corp, established in 1887 and based on East 37th Street in New York City, offered this introductory cook stove for just 10 cents, complete with a free cook book. A charming piece of early 20th-century advertising history.

Mantels with Metal
We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.
Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.

Installation
In most cases, no special and expensive brackets are required — just some lag screws. The different approaches outlined are very strong, simple, and economical. Take a look at our mantel installation tips.
