Product Description

This is a nice fireplace mantel made from an original settler log cabin dating back to the late 1800s. This piece has wonderful character, color, and history. There’s also some nice dark hues around the cracks and knots. The front has a wonderful wavy, knotty face — just very natural and soothing. There is an original peg hole on the left. Pegs place between the logs kept the stacks of wall stable. This mantel is 63.5in long to the original dovetail joint. If you include the dovetail, it goes to 69.5in. The top and bottom show original ax marks from when the settler hand hewed a tree into a usable beam. Nice color variation from light to dark throughout this mantel. On the left side of the top, you’ll also see a bunch of hash marks. These are also call marriage marks. They indicate the position of the long. I’m guessing that this one was close to the top — up 10 rows or so. This is indeed the real thing.

This mantel beam also has a great history. It came from a old Norwegian log home near Lanesboro, Minnesota. The Nyhus family settled in Fillmore county in 1880s. The story goes that the house was originally further up the bluff. The farmer was tired of bringing his cows down from the top of the bluff to the river, so they moved the house down the bluff quite a ways. It was an unusual treat to get a picture of the original settler family. Note the family photo is that of the original Nyhus Family.

There is also little blog post on our site regarding the newspapers articles that we found insulating the walls of the old house.

While this mantel is 69.5in with the dovetail, we have priced it for 63.5 inches long at $115/LF. These log cabin timbers are a lot of work. We’re happy to cut it down to size but the price is firm. We’ll refinish the cut faces as needed. Shipping runs $65.

Note, with the less-than-average depth on this piece, I’d suggest that it is installed with a backer board (something like a modern 2×6) so that none of the good wood gets buried into the stonework.

The Tag- Di-Etts Tablets. I think this advertisement dates back to the early 1950s. This history of diet pills is pretty scary. The first link on Google when searching for Di-Etts in the 1950s popped up this quote, “Obetrol, a pill popular in the 1960s and later reformulated as Adderall, contained a toxic mix of amphetamine (speed), methamphetamine (meth) and dextroamphetamine(dex) salts bound to get you higher than the sky. Amphetamines generated considerable interest among physicians eager to capitalize on their actions.” Wow!

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
