With 1800s vintage hand hewing marks, this mantel is the real thing. With its amber, rust and marigold hues, this mantel would compliment slate ledgestone wonderfully. This mantel shelf was cut from a large 10×10, vintage barn beam from the 1800s. The front and bottom are original hand hewn and the top is cut smooth. This provides the nice rectangular shape as well as a flat surface for decorations. Depending on the height of your mantel, the top may or may not be particularly visible. We’ve also seen people mount the flat side down when resting on a brick fireplace.

The texture on this mantel has particularly pleasant hand hewing — enough to be interesting and authentic, but not so much as to be distracting. This mantel shelf was finished with Rubio Moncoat. It is a very expensive finish, but it really does a wonderful job of creating a durable, yet touchable and natural feel.

This mantel beam came from an early 1900s vintage barn between Waconia, MN and Cologne, MN. This particular beam was almost 20 feet long and resting in the milking parlor. It was probably recovered from another nearby barn. These towns are about 40 miles SW of Minneapolis downtown. This is the current edge of modern farm country in these parts. Once upon a time before the suburbs, farm country was much closer to Minneapolis downtown. The soil here is still rich and runs black as deep as three feet. This was also the Western edge of what was once referred to as the Big Woods. If you have ever read Laura Ingalls Wilder books, you’ll see references to this very woods.

We can cut this mantel shorter and refinish the ends for an additional $50.

It can be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states via FedEx Gnd for $75.

The Tag — Westrums Donuts. You can’t go to the fair without getting some mini donuts. Gotta love ’em. This is what’s left of our little treat — just an empty bag.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
