Product Description

This mantel beam is filled with beautiful, rugged character and color. The front face and bottom have original ax marks dating back to the late 1800s. It sports a wonderful gingerbread brown color accented by some deeper chocolate and black hues. All three of these visible sides are original and free of mortise pockets. The tops side has a much more aggressive character including lots of nail holes and some worm trails. Not to worry, we kiln treat beams so that they are free of bugs and other pests.

There tend to be two types of hand hewing — rough and smooth. Often times, you’ll see beams that are “choppy” looking. To get beams smoother, they work the beam several times with different tools. For example, they may do the first pass with a broad ax or even a felling ax. Then, the would do second or third pass with an adz. This mantel is the former — a single pass with a felling ax.

The original beam came from an old barn in Southwest Wisconsin. It probably dated back to the late 1800s We purchased this wood from an Amish gentleman who lives out in the rolling hills of the area. That area is still dotted with small farms where the cows and other livestock wander out in the corrals. It’s not like the modern farms that we see by our place in Minnesota with hundreds of cows stuffed in a tin building. It is great to see agriculture the way that I remember it as a kid.

This mantel is 58 inches long and is priced at $115/LF. We can cut this one down to any length. We will resize at no charge, but the total price on this one is firm. We’ll refinish the ends so no one will ever know it has been cut. Shipping will run $75 via FedEx Gnd.

About the tag – This is part of an advertisement for the 1951 release of Alice in Wonderland in Technicolor. Technicolor at this time was a filming technique in which they took 3 separate shots in different color of the animation cell to create a deeply saturated color final product.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
