This is a really nice piece of wood. It's extremely solid old white oak. Around here, when they built buildings, the used white oak on the sill beams -- the beams that touch the ground. White oak has natural rot resistance – much better than most other woods. They often times used white oak for fence posts – it’s that good. Who needs green-treated lumber when you have white oak?
This particular piece came from a granary near New Prague, Minnesota. It has original hand hewn marks and probably dates back to the 1880-1890s. The square holes are where they mortised in the real red oak 2x4 studs. They didn’t use toe-nailed, pneumatic nails in those days. They round holes were later additions for whatever else they needed in the interior of the building.< BR>
The symmetric cut is at 82 inches; however, this could be stretched to 84….maybe even 86 inches with some filling.
