Here's a very rustic American Elm Mantel from an original settler Cabin in Minnesota. It probably dates back to the late 1800s. It has some very rustic character as well as an interesting curve. There’s plenty of original ax marks, also known as, hand hewing.
From a historical perspective, we would like to keep log cabins as a unit. However, there are plenty of situations that make them difficult to re-assemble and re-use. Usually, they are cut-up as the buildings have been added to over time. Sometimes, the log cabins were poorly marked when they were disassembled – turning them into a 10,000lb jig saw puzzle.
