This old beam is actually a rafter plate from an old log cabin in Reedsville, Wisconsin. Originally, it was tilted upwards and the angle of the beam followed the angle of the roof. The notches were for the rafters. Not too many craftsmen did work this nice. More often than not, it was just a flat beam with notches. I could probably make an argument that the flat top method is stronger, but this way is certainly takes more work and skill.
It’s kind of funny. Everyone seems to say all the craftsmen were great in the yesteryear; but we see all kinds of work. Some were indeed very skilled; others, not so much. We’ve seen countless misplaced mortise pockets as well as angled beams.
