Here’s a Hand Hewn Red Oak Mantel from a log cabin in Reedsville, Wisconsin. It was an 1870s vintage place, but it was not properly marked before it was dismantled by an Amish gent. It became a pile of logs.
The two sides have original ax marks; the back is cut flat for mounted. The face has a wonderful flowing look with some knots and a filled peg hole.
Contrary to our typical approach of using natural oils, this one has a Minwax Provincial stain followed by a coat of Rubio Monocoat.
