This old beam came from a barn near Chanhassen, Minnesota which is now a suburb of Minneapolis. The owner says that it dates back to the 1850s – prior to Minnesota becoming a state. Technically, the farm owners were squatting on Indian lands. The Sioux, also known as Dakota, Indians were the primary residents of the area. Lincoln signed the Homestead Act in 1862 which encouraged settlers to move West.
This is a Red Elm Beam from one of those original buildings. It shows lots of ax marks where the original settler squared off the beam. We also left a pegged mortise and tenon joint where this piece joined into another beam.
Note the label is from a 1950’s vintage newspaper. The caption reads “Jeep – Universal with 4-wheel drive gets you in – and it also gets you out.” The caption from the car reads “Who needs 4-wheel drive?”
