 This fireplace mantel is a combination of several pieces. We loved the 4x6 with holes in it, but there was a rounded edge that was just too much to get over. So, we combined several pieces of wood together to get a very nice look. The odd combination of boards is not super obvious until you look at the end. The holes are filled with original log cabin pegs – not modern fashioned pegs. They probably date back to the 1890s. Why this board had the holes in it is somewhat of a mystery. My only guess is that it was the base of some sort of cow stanchion or fence-like structure in the barn. This mantel is hollow in the back, so it is much lighter than others of the same size. It could also be cut down by about 12 inches if needed.
