This mantel beam has great tree-like character as well as historic 1800s vintage ax marks. This mantel beam is a classic log home timber with a rounded, tree-like face and hand hewn top and bottom. This particular piece is Red Oak. It has acquired a nice patina over time. The top shows a nice variation in coloring as well as some original ax marks and some nail holes. It has fine lines of black – called “spalting.” Bowl turners love to find spalted wood. The bottom shows some variations in color as well as a few ax marks.

The cabin was erected north of Kilkenny, Minnesota and close to the Cannon River. This log cabin originally had a wooden basement of vertical stockade style walls. During regular river flooding, the basement would also flood. After enough basement flooding, the owner dragged the log cabin (without the basement) across the frozen river and up to higher ground. Note, there are some amazing pictures out there of house moving pre-automobile.

While the story was that the cabin dated back to 1803, that is much too old for Minnesota. Fort Snelling, the first white settlement in the area, was built in the 1820s.  It really wasn’t until Lincoln’s land grants in the 1860s that Minnesota settlements began in earnest. Kilkenny, Minnesota was settled in 1856 and platted in 1877. The railroad depot was built in 1877. My guess is that this cabin was built sometime in the late 1800s — perhaps between 1856 and 1877 as railroads often meant access to sawn, rather than hand hewn lumber.

This mantel beam is priced at $115/ per LF. We will cut down the mantel length and reduce the price by $9.58 per inch, up to a $115 discount.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
