This hand hewn white oak mantel beam has lots of features on it. The front face has a single mortise pocket that has been filled. The fill is an old white oak end-grain plug with tight, beautiful growth rings. The end-grain is often the prettiest part of an old timber.

The top has been cut flat — which is great for pictures and knick-knacks. With the cut, we revealed a wonderful streaked white oak. White oak is naturally a wheatish-tan color. However, when the wood sits in a barn environment, it can darken up to nearly a dark roast coffee brown. The dark coloring saturates into the cracks of the wood. When we cut mantel beam, we remove much of the color, but end up with the dark streaks following the old cracks. The top also hosts an assortment of critter trails. Looks like ants and a large beetle larvae lived there once upon a time. Long since gone and no trace of current infestation. There’s another filled mortise pocket on top as well as original pegs which held the opposing tenon into place. We could darken the color of the top, but we liked it as-is.

Finally, the bottom has a nice collection of 1800s vintage ax marks. There are another pair of pegs that followed through to the top and held the tenon into the mortise pocket.

This mantel beam came from a late 1800s vintage barn near Southwest Wisconsin — out in the beautiful rolling hills. It is alway nice to head out to this part of the country. You still see lots of small family farms with animals still out in the pastures. It is a welcome relief from the industrial farming that we see in our parts.

This beam is priced at $115/LF. We can cut the beam down to any length and reduce the price by $9.58 per inch, up to a maximum discount of $115.  This one can ship via FedEx Gnd. We use a flat rate of $65 for all mantels that ship via FedEx.

Note, the advertisement is from a 1930 edition of the Minneapolis Journal. It is Eveready Prestone Anti-Freeze and you can find the old cans on Ebay. There’s a great 1930s billboard picture in Wikipedia. Eveready and Prestone brands were owned by Union Carbide which was founded in 1917. They created a factory in 1920 the make ethylene glycol for use as anti-freeze. At the time, zinc-carbon batteries were the standard D-sized flashlight batteries.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
