Product Description

This mantel beam is filled with beautiful, rugged character and color. The front face and bottom have original ax marks dating back to the late 1800s. It sports a wonderful saddle brown color accented by some deeper chocolate hues. The front has as little peg on the lower right that held in the original mortise and tenon joint between two beams. We re-filled the mortise pocket on the bottom with a nicely matching side-grain piece. The fill is a nice testament to the old history of this beam.

The top side has been cut smooth to remove some rot issues. It creates a nice flat surface for all of your pictures, decorations, and mementos. It shows off the beautiful grain patterns in this very tight grained old wood. There are also a couple of fills on the top. The color is more typical of a warm wheat. If desired, we can darken up the top a little bit.

The original beam came from an old barn in Southwest Wisconsin. It probably dated back to the late 1800s We purchased this wood from an Amish gentleman who lives out in the rolling hills of the area. That area is still dotted with small farms where the cows and other livestock wander out in the corrals. It’s not like the modern farms that we see by our place in Minnesota with hundreds of cows stuffed in a tin building. It is great to see agriculture the way that I remember it as a kid.

This mantel is 78 inches long and is priced at $115/LF. We can cut this one down to any length. We will discount a smaller beam by $9.58 per inch, up to a $115 discount. We’ll refinished the ends so no one will ever know it has been cut. Shipping will run $65 via FedEx Gnd.

About the tag – JRC Radio Tubes from Johnsonberg, Pennsylvania. Their tagline was “Thoroughbreds of Radio.” They hosted a number of award winning thoroughbred race horses on their advertisements. This ad was taken from a 1930s vintage newspaper — long before television and computers.

More Mantel Inventory

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
